Nuvei completes a live in-agent payment with Visa and outlines its merchant-led agentic payments plans

On July 2, 2026, Nuvei said it completed a live agentic-commerce proof of concept with Visa, Arvato Systems and fashion brand Kings and Priests, in which a merchant’s AI agent bought a product for a shopper and paid inside the agent.

What changed

Correction (October 2026): An earlier version of this story included claims about Nuvei bank-transfer products — lower costs, a ‘zero chargeback guarantee’ and ‘Assured Funds’ — that do not appear in this announcement; they come from Nuvei’s general website marketing. It was also dated September 5, 2026; Nuvei announced the proof of concept on July 2, 2026.

Nuvei says that in the proof of concept a merchant’s AI agent initiated a purchase on a shopper’s behalf and paid inside the agent, with no hand-off to a separate payment flow. Issuers including Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, Bank Leumi, CAL, MAX and Bank of Cyprus took part; payments settled on live Visa rails using a tokenized Visa credential within Visa Intelligent Commerce, under shopper-set guardrails such as spend caps and approved categories. Nuvei also described two planned building blocks: a Protocol Compatibility Layer to accept payments from agent standards such as ACP, AP2 or MCP, and ‘Know Your Agent’ identity and governance tools. It says it intends to certify against Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay and is targeting initial availability in the second half of 2026.

Why a business should care

Payment Radar’s view: this is a proof of concept, not a product merchants can switch on today. It shows how card payments made by a merchant’s own AI agent could work on existing Visa tokenization and controls.

Who it affects

Merchants and platforms exploring AI shopping agents, and the issuers and networks involved. The live test involved issuers in Europe.

What to consider doing

Payment Radar’s view: merchants interested in agent-initiated payments can ask their payment provider what protocols, controls and liability rules would apply, and when such tools would be available.

Uncertainty and risks

This is a Nuvei release about a proof of concept; availability, pricing and liability rules for agent payments are not given. The $1 trillion and $3–5 trillion projections Nuvei cites are McKinsey estimates, not Nuvei results.
